Kicking your feet up on the back porch of your ranch not only needs a good whiskey, but a good book, too.

"The Son" by Austin's own Philip Meyer
is a lengthy epic of Texas proportions, perfect for weekend reading.

The book is also being turned into an AMC series set for release in 2017. This Texan is looking foward to seeing what Texas towns make it into the movie.

You're not the only one looking for room to roam.  The American Bison once graced our country in numbers of almost 60 million.  When unregulated and  excessive hunting brought that number drastically down, some Texans took it upon themselvs to conserve this national symbol of the open range.  Acccording to Jose Musico of the Dallas Morning News, Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight opened thier ranch to save and preserve the bison a full century before the Endangered Species Act.  The official Texas bison herd is maintained in Caprock Canyon, north of Lubbock.  Maintaining a bison herd, for conservation and most recently ranching purposes, is unique compared to that of cattle or horse ranching.
