Michele Payn, CEO and Author
Exposing Pecksniffery and
Debunking Common Food Myths

Last year, I attended The Wizard Academy’s Reputation Tool Chest workshop taught by award-winning business journalist, Dean Rotbart.

Dean is the host of Monday Morning Radio, a popular business-to-business podcast that in 2016 alone attracted more than a quarter-million listeners. With Dean’s help, I launched RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS earlier this year, and I’m pleased that Dean continues to work with me to build our RANCHCAST audience and ensure the quality of our episodes.

This week Dean and I share hosting duties – combining our two audiences for a very special interview. Our guest is Michele Payn, a nationally recognized influencer in the large, growing, and very successful farm-to-table movement.

Michele is CEO of Cause Matters Corp., a consulting firm that advises companies and individuals on how to influence public discourse surrounding agriculture, health, and nutrition topics. This week Michele celebrates the official publication of her newest book: “Food Truths From Farm to Table.”

While my expertise is in ranching, farming, and rural real estate, Dean is an expert on small business, reputation management, and effective communication. Together we explore with Michele both the business and the nutrition aspects of ranching and farming, and debunk some of the most common food myths.

You focus on eating while core problems are in different areas:
1) Why is it bad or hard to properly label food with GMO ingredients as such? Why constant (in USA) fight against such simple and honest step? People don't like being left in the dark about the food content, raising the level of mistrust. Solution is easy and trivial: label and let consumer decide.
2) How do you resolve agricultural problem of cross-pollination combined to a high negative sense with manufactured sterility of highly market-controlled GMO plants? Two separate sub-problems here: a) Farmer might want to grow non-GMO crop and the fact that his (not even close) neighbor decides on GMO leads to pollution of his crop with unwanted GMO. Right now nobody pays for damages (and in some cases just the opposite persecution happens by overzealous GMO manufacturers)? b) Farmer attempting to grow from his own (supposed but polluted)non-GMO seed may encounter dramatic seed viability drop if his crop was cross-pollinated by GMO source... Equivalent of "highly scientific" neighbor spraying general herbicide over other properties with no care.. Right now no way to recover damages. Side note: Published, peer-reviewed (Canada) research shows cross-pollination with GMO even at distances of 200km... Reality.
3) Ok, you the "highly scientific farmer" decided to grow GMO crop which typically self-produces neonicotinide pesticides. How about a legislation that would ban you from spraying any more pesticides over those crops in order to be good neighbor and good Nature steward? When GMO makers and GMO farmers themselves push for such controls, they'll deserve more respect and trust. Side note: published, peer reviewed studies point that because of pesticide tolerance GMO crops get typically sprayed EVEN MORE despite own pesticide content...
Address these issues and than talk about people eating GMO or not.
